60A INVERNESS (Diesel depot)

The shed is situated in the triangle of lines at the east end of the station. The yard is visible from the avoiding line.

Turn right outside the station into Academy Street. Turn right again into Strothers Lane, and left at the end into Railway Terrace. A footbridge leads to the shed from an opening on the right hand side next to house No. 31. Walking time 5 minutes.

There is also a boarded crossing from the east end of Platform No. 5 to the shed.

60B AVIEMORE (Diesel depot)

The shed is on the east side of the line north of the station. The yard is visible from the line.

A path runs from the north end of the up platform to the shed. Walking time 5 minutes.

60C HELMSDALE (Diesel depot)

The shed is on the south side of the line at the west end of thestation. The yard is visible from the line.

Entrance to the shed is effected from the down platform.

60D WICK (Diesel depot)

The shed is at the south side of the station. The yard is partially visible from the line.

Turn right outside the station along the approach road at the back of the goods yard. Turn right along a cinder path at the far end of this goods yard. This leads to the shed. Walking time less than 5 minutes.

61A KITTYBREWSTER (Diesel depot)

The shed is on the west side of the station. The top of the yard is visible from the line.

A cinder path leads from the station yard to the shed. The entrance to this path is on the opposite side of the yard to the station and is not too obvious. Walking time less than 5 minutes.

Bus services Nos. 18 (Smithfield), 24 (Scatterburn), 25 (Hayton) and 26 (Printfield Walk) operate between Union Street (close to Aberdeen Station) and Kittybrewster Station. In the reverse direction services Nos. 25 and 26 show destinations Faulds Gate and Kincorth respectively. After passing through the town, they operate along part of Polmuir Road. Ferryhill shed is a short distance further, on the right—hand side.

KEITH (Diesel depot)

The shed is on the south side of the line east of Keith Junction Station. The yard is visible from the line.

Go straight ahead into the approach road from the station. Turn left over a level crossing into a short road. Turn left at the end of this road for about 200 yards. A cinder path leads across a field on the left-hand side to the shed. Walking time 10 minutes.

ELGIN (Diesel depot)

The shed is on the south side of the Craigellachie line just past the junction with the Buckie line. The yard is visible from the line.

Turn right outside the station exit into Station Road and continue along Maisondieu Road past the other exit. Turn right into Victoria Crescent, right at the end into East Road and right again into a road just past the level-crossing. The shed entrance is a gate on the right-hand side of this road. Walking time 10 minutes.

61B ABERDEEN (FERRYHILL)

The shed is on the west side of the main line just south of the Junction with the Ballater line. The yard is partially visible from the line.

Turn left out of the station yard into Guild Street. Turn left into College Street, continue into South College Street and Wellington Road. Bear left under the railway bridge and turn right along North Esplanade West. Continue under the suspension bridge, turn right into Polmuir Road, and proceed under the railway bridge. A drive leads to the shed from the left—hand side of this road just before the park. Walking time 20 minutes.

62A THORNTON

The shed is on the south side of the Thornton-Dunfermline line. The yard is visible from the line.

Go straight ahead outside Thornton Junction Station into the village. Turn left along the main road and continue until a railway under-bridge is reached. A drive runs along the side of the line to the shed from the right-hand side of the road, just past this bridge. Walking time 25 minutes.

62B DUNDEE

The lines from Dundee West Station to Perth, and Dundee Tay Bridge Station to Leuchars run parallel for about three quarters of a mile west of the respective stations. At this point there is a junction to allow Perth trains access to Dundee Tay Bridge Station. The steam shed lies between the lines east of this junction, and the diesel shed is on the north side of the Perth line. The yard is partially visible from each line.

Turn right outside Dundee West Station and follow the road round to the right past both entrances to Dundee Tay Bridge Station. This road leads into the goods yard. Turn right over the bridge in the goods yard and left along a cobbled way that leads to the shed. Walking time 5 minutes.

Note.-The steam and diesel sheds are connected by a boarded crossing over the line to Dundee West Station.

62C DUNFERMLINE

The shed is on the south side of the line east of Dunfermline Upper Station. The yard is visible from the line.

Go straight ahead across the yard outside Dunfermline Upper Station into Upper Station Road. Turn left into James Street and continue into Holyrood Place. (This road bears left at the traffic roundabout.) Turn right along a narrow path that leads from the right-hand side of the road at the side of house No. 95 (just before the railway over-bridge). The shed entrance is on the left-hand side of this path. Walking time 10 minutes.

From Dunfermline Lower Station

Leave the station by the approach road on the north side leading to Comely Park Place. Continue along a road at the perimeter of the park, and ascend the hill. Bear right into Holyrood Place, and continue as above. Walking time 15 minutes.

63A PERTH

The shed is on the west side of the line about one mile south of the station. The yard is visible from the line.

Leave Perth Station by the footbridge at the south end of Nos. 4 and 5 platforms, turning right along St. Leonard’s Bridge. Turn left almost immediately into Priory Place and continue into Craigie Road. Fork left into Glenearn Road and turn right at the end into Edinburgh Road (A90). The shed entrance is on the left-hand side a few yards further on. Walking time 15 minutes.

FORFAR

The shed is on the north side of the line east of the station. The yard is visible from the line.

Turn left out of the station yard and first left over the railway bridge. The shed entrance is on the left hand side just past the bridge. Walking time 5 minutes.

63B FORT WILLIAM

The shed is on the north side of the line east of the station. The yard is visible from the line.

Turn left over a level-crossing at the north end of the station platforms, and turn right almost immediately along a narrow path running between the line and the sea wall. This leads to the shed. Walking time 5 minutes.

63C OBAN

The shed is at the side of a goods spur. The yard is not visible from the line.

Turn right outside the station across Argyll Square. Turn right into High Street and continue into Glenshellach Terrace. The shed entrance is on the left-hand side. Walking time 5 minutes.

Sub-shed: BALLACHULISH

64A ST. MARGARETS (EDINBURGH)

The shed is on both sides of the line about 1½ miles east of Waverley Station. The yard is visible from the line.

Leave Edinburgh Waverley Station by means of Waverley Steps, and turn right into Princes Street. (There are several other exits from the station.) Continue along Waterloo Place, Regent Road, Montrose Terrace and London Road. Turn left into Clockmill Road and the shed entrance is on the right-hand side. Walking time 30 minutes.

Note.—The office is on the north side of the line by a roundhouse, but the main shed is on the opposite side of the line.
Great care should be taken to obey the warning signals when using the boarded crossing over the main line from the roundhouse to the main shed building.

SEAFIELD

The shed is close to the end of the L.M.S. South Leith Dock Branch.

Turn right outside Edinburgh Waverley Station along Princes Street and fork left into Leith Street. Fork right into Union Place and continue along Antigua Street, Haddington Place and Leith Walk to Foot of Leith Walk. Turn right into Duke Street and left into Hermitage Place. Continue along Claremont Park bearing left with this road and turn sharp right into Seafield Road. Pass the entrance to South Leith Shed on the left and a few yards further on turn left over a footbridge running over the low level line. Continue along The Promenade (a rough road running between the high level line and the sea wall), and the shed entrance is on the left a short distance further on. Walking time 60 minutes.

SOUTH LEITH

The shed, consisting of an office and pit, is on the side of the L.N.E.R. South Leith Goods Branch close to the point where the L.M.S. South Leith Dock Branch passes over the top.

This shed is about ¼ mile from Seafield Shed and the means of approach are the same as for Seafield.

64B HAYMARKET

The shed is on the north side of the line west of the station. The yard is visible from the line.

Turn left outside Haymarket Station into Haymarket Terrace (main road). Continue along West Coates and turn sharp left into Russell Road. A drive leads to the shed from the right-hand side of this road. Walking time 10 minutes.

64C DALRY ROAD

The shed is in the fork of the Princes Street-Granton goods line and the Princes Street-Merchiston line. The yard is visible from the Merchiston line and partially so from the other line.

Turn sharp right outside Haymarket Station into Dalry Road. Proceed under the railway bridge, and ascend the steps (known as Coffin Lane) on the leftihand side. Turn left into Dundee Street, and the shed entrance is on the left-hand side. Walking time 15 minutes.

64F BATHGATE

The shed is on the north side of the line east of Bathgate Upper Station (closed). There is now no regular passenger service on this line.

The shed entrance is in Kings Street (A89) a few yards east of the traffic lights at the town centre. The Edinburgh to Glasgow via Bathgate bus service passes the shed entrance.

64G HAWICK

The shed is at the west side of the station at the north end. The yard is visible from the line.

Turn right outside the station into the main road. A few yards further on there is a gate on the right—hand side leading into the goods yard. A path leads from this gate to the shed. Walking time less than 5 minutes.

64H LEITH CENTRAL (Diesel railcar depot)

The shed is the former Leith Central Passenger Station. It is at the end of a goods branch.

Turn right outside Edinburgh Waverley Station along Princes Street, and fork left into Leith Street. Fork right into Union Place and continue along Antigua Street, Haddington Place, and Leith Walk to Foot of Leith Walk. The shed entrance is on the right-hand side. Walking time 25 minutes.

65A EASTFIELD (GLASGOW)

The shed is on the east side of the line north of Cowlairs Station The yard is visible from the line.

Go straight ahead along Cowlairs Road from Cowlairs Station. Turn left into Springburn Road and left into Hawthorn Street. A drive leads to the shed from the right-hand side of this road just before the railway over-bridge. Walking time 20 minutes.

65B ST. ROLLOX (BALORNOCK)

The shed is on the north side of the line about two miles from Buchanan Street Station. The yard is partially visible from the line.

Turn left outside Buchanan Street Station into Buchanan Street, and left into Parliamentary Road. Turn left at the end into Castle Street, and right into Royston Road. Continue for about one mile, and turn left into Broomfield Road. The shed entrance is on the right, just past the railway under-bridge. Walking time 40 minutes.

The shed is on the south side of the line about ½ mile west of Carntyne Station. The yard is visible from the line.

Turn left outside Duke Street Station into Duke Street and left again into a cinder path by the fork of Duke Street and Shettleston Road. This path leads to the shed. Walking time 15 minutes.

65F GRANGEMOUTH

The shed is on the west side of the line about 1¼ miles south of the station. The yard is visible from the line.

Turn left outside Grangemouth Station along the main road to Falkirk and continue along this road for about a mile. Cross the Stirling-Linlithgow Road and turn second left along a lane. The shed entrance is on the left-hand side. Walking time 25 minutes. The Grangemouth-Falkirk bus services passes the station and the end of the lane.

65G YOKER

The shed is on the north side of a goods line between Scotstoun West Junction and Clydebank Dock West Junction.

Turn right outside Yoker Ferry Station along Greenlaw Road and right again into Dumbarton Road. After about ½ mile turn left into Dyke Road, and the shed entrance is on the left-hand side just past the railway under-bridge. Walking time 15 minutes.

65J STIRLING

The shed is on the east side of the line south of the station. The yard is visible from the line.

Leave the station by the approach road and turn left into Murray Place. Turn left into Thistle Street, continue into Goosecroft Road and turn left at the end into Kerse Road. A path leads to the shed from the left-hand side, just past the railway under-bridge. Walking time 10 minutes.

65K POLMONT

The shed is on the south side of the line west of the station. The yard is visible from the line.

Turn sharp left outside the station along a cinder path running parallel to the line. Turn left over a railway bridge and right on to the canal towing path. A cinder path leads down to the shed from this towing path. Walking time 10 minutes.

66A POLMADIE (GLASGOW)

The shed is on the east side of the main line south of Eglinton Street Station. The yard is partially visible from the line.

Turn right outside the main entrance to Glasgow Central Station along Gordon Street. Turn first right into Union Street nd left into Argyle Street. Continue into Trongate and turn right into Saltmarket. Continue over Albert Bridge into Crown Street. Fork left into Rutherglen Road and turn right into Polmadie Road (after a considerable distance). The shed entrance is on the left-hand side, just before the railway under- bridge. Walking time 40 minutes.

The shed is on the west side of the Coatbridge line north of the station. The yard is visible from the line.

Turn left outside the station along Muir Street (main road). Turn tirst right after crossing the railway bridge. This is a rough cul-de-sac and the shed entrance is at the end. Walking time 10 minutes.

Turn right into Ratho Street outside Cartsdyke Station and right into East Hamilton Street. Turn right nto Ladyburn Street, go under the railway bridge and turn left into Leitch Street. The shed entrance is on the left-hand side. Walking time 10 minutes.

66E CARSTAIRS

The shed is adjacent to the north east side of the station. The yard is partially visible from the line.

A footbridge connects the Glasgow end of the station platforms and leads to the shed.

66F BEATTOCK

The shed is on the west side of the line at the north end of the station. The yard is visible from the line.

Entrance to the shed is effected from the north end of the down platform.

67A CORKERHILL (GLASGOW)

The shed is on the south side of the line east of the station. The yard is visible from the line.

Turn left outside the station along Corkerhill Place. About 200 yards further on a cinder path leads from the left-hand side of the road (by the Railway Mission Building) to the shed. Walking time 5 minutes.

67B HURLFORD

The shed is on the south side of the line west of Barleith Halt. The yard is visible from this line and from the main line.

Turn right along a short cul-de-sac outside Barleith Halt. The shed entrance is at the end of this cul-de-sac. Walking time less than 5 minutes.

The Cumnock and Bankfoot bus services operating from Kilmarnock Bus Station pass Barleith Halt. The stop is locally known as " The Blocks."

MUIRKIRK

The shed is on the south side of the line west of the station. The yard is visible from the line.

The shed entrance is on the opposite side of the road to the station entrance. Walking time less than 5 minutes.

67C AYR

The shed is in the triangle formed by the Ayr-Newton-on-Ayr- Auchincruive lines. The yard is partially visible from each line.

Turn right outside Newton-on-Ayr Station into Falkland Park Road, and right again along Prestwick Road (over the railway bridge). Fork left into Allison Street and turn left into Viewfield Road. A footbridge leads from the left—hand side of this road to the shed. Walking time 10 minutes.

67D ARDROSSAN

The shed is in a triangle formed by the Glasgow-Ardrossan, Glasgow-Largs and Ardrossan-Largs (G. & S.W.) lines. The yard is partially visible from all three lines.

From Ardrossan Town Station

Turn left outside the station into Princes Street. Bear left at the end into Arran Place and continue into South Crescent Road. Turn left into Kilmenny Terrace and left again into a footpath leading past the Bowling Green. Turn right over a footbridge by Castlehill Signal Cabin and right again into a footpath running parallel to the line. Cross the railway by means of a further footbridge, and a path leads from this point to the shed. Walking time 25 minutes.

From South Beach Station

Turn left outside the station into South Beach Road and right at the end into South Crescent Road. Turn right again into Kilmenny Terrace and continue as above. Walking time 20 minutes.

The shed is on the east side of the line just south of the station. The yard is visible from the line.

Turn left outside the station along the approach road. Turn left into St. Mary’s Street over the bridge. The shed entrance is on the right-hand side, just past the bridge. Walking time less than 5 minutes.

67F STRANRAER

The shed is in the fork of the Stranraer Harbour-Dumfries and Stranraer Town—Dumfries lines. The yard is visible from both lines.

Go straight ahead outside Stranraer Town Station into Station Street. A cinder path leads from the right-hand side of the road to the shed. Walking time 5 minutes.
