I used to have literally hundreds of these from all over back in the 60s/70s! Never thought they’d be of any future interest, so I binned them. We used to collect them as a matter of course on our train spotting ventures, though gods know why, and they were printed on paper so thin that it they were almost see-through. As with lots of things I’ve jettisoned over the years, I wish I hadn’t!
This one is from as far back as 1934, for bank holiday excursions from Sheffield to Cleethorpes. (The brown patch in the top left corner is from the hook that used to be used to hang these up in bunches.) Very much a journey for Sheffield folk, but I’m surprised that (a) it started in the suburbs at Deepcar, and (b) that it served Shireoaks but not Worksop. And then non-stop as far as Grimsby apart from a stop at beautiful Brigg.
7s 6d sounds cheap for a trip from Deepcar to Cleethorpes, but the average weekly wage then was around £3, so that’s around 12% of weekly income – which would be equivalent of around £90 today! That’s staggering if I’ve done my sums right (no guarantee offered).
