30A STRATFORD (Diesel depot)
The shed is in a maze of lines at the north-west side of the station. The yard is partially visible from the line between the low level platforms of Stratford Station and Lea Bridge.

 

A tunnel runs under the railway from William Street to the shed. The tunnel entrance is about 20 yards left of the main station entrance. Walking time 10 minutes.

COLCHESTER (Diesel depot)
The shed is between the main and goods lines west of the station. The yard is visible from the line.

 

A boarded crossing gives access to the shed from the end of Platform No. 3.

 

RIPPLE LANE (Diesel depot)
The shed is situated between the up and down lines about one mile west of Dagenham Dock Station. The yard is partially visible from the lines.

 

Turn left outside Dagenham Dock Station into Chequers Lane. Turn left at the end into Ripple Road and after about 1 mile left into Renwick Road. A broad drive leads from the left-hand side of the railway bridge to the shed. Walking time 35 minutes.

 

L.T.E. bus No. 87 (Rainham) passes Barking (E.R. and L.T.E.) Station, and the end of Renwick Road.

 

TEMPLE MILLS (Diesel depot)
The shed is on the north side of the line east of Lea Bridge Station. The yard is visible from the line.

 

Turn left outside Lea Bridge Station into Lea Bridge Road and right into Seymour Road. Continue along a footpath, and turn right at the end into a rough extension of Marsh Lane. Access to the shed may be obtained from a gate at the end. Walking time 10 minutes.

 

Note.-Several lines have to be crossed, and there is no distinct path. Great care should be taken.

TILBURY
The shed is in the triangle of the Tilbury Riverside-Tilbury Town-Low Street lines. The yard is visible from the two lines going to Tilbury Town Station.

 

Leave Tilbury Riverside Station by the exit on the west side, and proceed parallel to the line, continuing into Ferry Road. A footbridge leads to the shed from the right-hand side of this road. Walking time 5 minutes.

30F PARKESTON (Diesel depot)
The shed is on the north side of the line at the east end of Harwich Parkeston Quay Station. The yard is visible from the line.

 

A path runs from the station platform to the shed. Walking time less than 5 minutes.

31A CAMBRIDGE (Diesel depot)
The shed is on the east side of the line about one mile north of the station. The yard is visible from the line.

 

Cross the station yard into Station Road, and turn first right into Tenison Road. Turn right into Devonshire Road, and right at the end into Mill Road. Cross the railway, and turn left into Cavendish Road. Turn right into Wetenhall Road, left at the end into Sedgwick Street, and continue along Cromwell Road. Turn left into Coldhams Lane, and fork right along the low level road by the ” Greyhound ” public house. Enter the yard at the end, and turn left under the road bridge to the shed. Walking time 25 minutes.

31B MARCH
The shed is on the west side of the March-Spalding line. The yard is partially visible from the line.

 

Turn left outside the station and left over the level crossing, Turn first left into Norwood Road. A broad cinder path leads to the shed from the right-hand side of this road just past the railway under-bridge. Walking time 10 minutes.

 

Note.-The shed consists of two separate buildings.

 

WISBECH (Diesel depot)
The shed is at the south side of Wisbech East Station. The yard is visible from the line.

 

Entrance to the shed is effected from the level crossing at the west end of the station. Walking time less than 5 minutes.

 

KING’S LYNN TOWN (Diesel depot)
The shed is on the north side of the line at the east end of the station. The yard is visible from the line.

 

A path leads from the north side of the station to the shed. Walking time less than 5 minutes.

32A NORWICH THORPE (Diesel depot)
The shed is on the south side of the line east of Norwich Thorpe Station. The yard is visible from the line.

 

Go up the short slope from Norwich Thorpe Station yard to Lower Clarence Road. Continue along this road and turn first right into Clarence Road. The shed entrance is on the right-hand side just past the railway under-bridge. Walking time 10 minutes.

32B IPSWICH (Diesel depot)
The shed is on the east side of the line south of the station. The yard is visible from the line.

 

Turn right outside the station along Burrell Street. Fork right into Willoughby Road, and turn left at the top of the hill into Belstead Road. Turn right into Rectory Road, left into Croft Street and right at the end into Wherstead Road. The shed entrance is on the right-hand side. Walking time 25 minutes.

 

LOWESTOFT (Diesel stabling point)
The shed is on the south side of the line at the junction of the Beccles and Yarmouth lines, west of the station. The yard is visible from the line.

 

Turn sharp left outside the station along Denmark Road parallel to the line. Continue along this road until it begins to curve to the right. A cinder path runs from the left-hand side at this point across both sets of metals to the shed. Walking time 15 minutes.

 

YARMOUTH (SOUTH TOWN) (Diesel stabling point)
The shed is on the east side of the line south of the station. The yard is visible from the line.

 

Turn right outside South Town Station and first right into Station Road. A cinder path leads to the shed from the right-hand side of this road. Walking time 5 minutes.

 

YARMOUTH (VAUXHALL) (Diesel stabling point)
The shed is on the west side of the line north of Yarmouth Vauxhall Station. The yard is visible from the line.

 

Turn right outside the station into the goods yard. A road runs round the perimeter of the goods yard to the shed. Walking time 5 minutes.

34A KING’S CROSS
The shed is in King’s Cross goods yard. It is not visible from the main line.

 

Turn sharp left outside King’s Cross Station along York Way (running parallel to, and at the east side of the main line). A road leads round the perimeter of the goods yard to the shed, from an entrance on the left-hand side of York Way just past the junction of Goods Way. Walking time 15 minutes.

34D HITCHIN
Steam Shed (Closed, but houses office for diesel shed)
The shed is on the east side of the line at the south end of the station. The yard is visible from the line.

 

Cross the yard outside the station, and turn sharp right under the railway bridge. A path leads up a bank to the shed from the right-hand side of this road. Walking time 5 minutes.

 

Diesel Shed
The shed is on the west side of the line north of the station. The yard is not visible from the line.

 

Cross the yard outside the station, and turn sharp right. Turn left almost immediately along a very short road bounded by a grass covered island. Turn left into Nightingale Road, and the shed entrance is on the right-hand side. Walking time 5 minutes.

 
 

34E NEW ENGLAND
The shed is on the east side of the line 1½ miles north of Peterborough North Station. The yard is partially visible from the line.

 

Go straight ahead across the yard outside Peterborough North Station, and turn left into St. Leonard’s Street. Turn left into Westwood Street and continue along Walpole Street for about a mile. A broad path leads over a footbridge from the left-hand side of this road (by the junction of Lincoln Road, A15) to the shed. Walking time 40 minutes.

 

Bus service No. 301 (Walton) passes Peterborough East Station, and runs through the town to the “Greyhound” public house close to the shed entrance. In the opposite direction this service shows the destination Woodston.

 
 

34F GRANTHAM
The shed is at the west side of the station. The yard is visible from the line.

 

Turn left outside the station into Station Road, and almost immediately left along a subway running under the railway. The shed entrance is on the left-hand side immediately past the end of this subway. Walking time 5 minutes.

 
 

34G FINSBURY PARK (CLARENCE YARD) (Diesel depot)
The shed is on the west side of the line about ½ mile south of Finsbury Park Station. The yard is partially visible from the line.

 

Turn right outside Finsbury Park (E.R. and L.T.E.) Station, and almost immediately right again into Seven Sisters Road passing under the railway bridge. Turn left into Isledon Road and left into Tollington Road. The shed entrance is on the left-hand side. Walking time 10 minutes.

HORNSEY (Diesel stabling point)
The shed is at the east side of the station, being separated from the main line by the goods yard. The yard is partially visible from the main line.

 

After passing through the ticket barrier, turn right along the footbridge running over the top of the station. Descend the steps at the end into Hampden Road, and the shed entrance is on the right. Walking time less than 5 minutes.

HATFIELD (Diesel stabling point)
The shed is at the west side of the station. The yard is partially visible from the line.

 

Turn right from the station yard, and right again after a few yards into an alley. Continue across the footbridge over the railway and turn right at the end shed entrance is on the right-hand side a few yards further on. Walking time 5 minutes.

36A DONCASTER
The shed is on the east side of the line south of the station. The yard is partially visible from the line

Cross the station yard turning half right into Station Road. Turn right into St. Sepulchres Gate (main road to Rotherham) and continue for some distance, Turn left into St. Swithin Terrace just before the railway under-bridge. Continue along Kellam Street to the end and turn right into Oak Terrace. The shed entrance is at the end of this short cul-de-sac. Walking time 20 minutes.

Note.-If travelling in a motor vehicle turn left out of St. Swithin Terrace into Green Dyke Lane, and right into Carr Lane Immediately after passing the cemetery turn left into a private road which leads to the shed.
 
 
36C FRODINGHAM
The shed is on the north side of the line east of the station The yard is partially visible from the line.

Turn right outside Scunthorpe and Frodingham Station into Station Road. Turn fifth left into Cole Street, proceed to the junction with High Street (traffic lights) and turn right there. Continue along High Street until St. John’s Church is reached on the right. Immediately beyond the church Dawes Lane will be seen diverting to the left. Proceed along Dawes Lane, and the shed entrance is on the right about 100 yards beyond the railway crossing. Walking time 25 minutes.
 
 
36E RETFORD
G.N Shed
The shed is at the west side of Retford Station. The yard is partially visible from the line

Turn right outside the station, and almost immediately right again into a subway running under the railway. Ascend the steps to the second gate on the right. Go straight ahead through the cattle market, and turn right just past the Cattle Market Hotel. Cross a driveway and the shed entrance is ahead. Walking time 5 minutes.

G.C. Shed
The shed is on the south side of the Retford–Gainsborough line. The yard is visible from the line

Turn right outside the station into a public footpath running parallel to the Gainsborough line. This leads to a level crossing, and the shed entrance is on the opposite side of the crossing Walking time 5 minutes

There is also an entrance off the main London road adjacent to the bridge over the Gainsborough line.

40A LINCOLN
Steam Shed
The shed is on the south side of the line west of Lincoln Central Station. The yard is visible from the line.

 

Turn left outside Lincoln Central Station along St. Mary’s Street. Turn left into High Street and right into St. Mark’s Lane. Turn right along Brayford Wharf East, and a footbridge leads across the canal to the shed. Walking time 5 minutes.

 

Diesel Shed
The shed is on the south side of the Reepham line east of Lincoln Central Station. The yard is visible from the line.

 

Turn right outside Lincoln Central Station into St. Mary’s Street. Continue along Norman Place parallel to the railway, and proceed under a long road bridge. Ascend the flight of steps on the right, and turn left at the top over the bridge.

 

Immediately after crossing the railway descend a flight of steps on the left. Cross the short dead-end road at the bottom, and proceed along Great Northern Terrace parallel to the railway. Cross a level crossing and a boarded crossing leads to the shed from a gate on the left hand side just past this crossing. Walking time 10 minutes.

 
 

40B IMMINGHAM
The shed is near the south-west corner of Immingham Dockland.

 

From Grimsby Town Station
Board a Grimsby-Cleethorpes or Lincolnshire Road Co No. 45, 45B or 45X bus at Old Market Place, close to the station and alight in Queens Road, Immingham. A drive leads from the left-hand side of this road to the shed.

 

From Immingham Dock Station
Turn right outside Immingham Dock Station, and bear left with the dock road round the west and south sides of the main dock. Bear right towards the dock entrance nearest to Immingham village, and the shed is passed on the right-hand side. The whole of this route is in dockland and, as the roads are not named, may not be too easy to follow.

40E COLWICK
The shed is in the fork of the Colwick North Junction-Colwick East Junction, and Colwick North Junction-Netherfield and Colwick goods lines.

 

Turn right outside Netherfield and Colwick Station into Meadow Road. Turn right at the cross roads into Victoria Road, and the shed entrance is on the left-hand side just past the level crossing. Walking time 10 minutes.

 

Trent bus services Nos. 67, 69 and 70 operate from Nottingham (Huntingdon Street) to Victoria Road (Netherfield).

 
 

40F BOSTON
The shed is on the west side of the line south of the station. The yard is visible from the line.

 

Turn right outside the station into the approach road. Turn left into West Street, right into Queen Street, and right into Broadfield Street. A level crossing leads to the shed from the end of this street. Walking time 10 minutes.

 

SPALDING
The shed is closed, but a number of diesel locomotives stand in a siding at the west side of the station.

41A SHEFFIELD (DARNALL)

The shed is on the south side of the line west of Darnall Station. The yard is visible from the line.


Turn into Station Road outside Darnall Station. At the end of Station Road turn left into Main Road, and bear left into Staniforth Road. Turn left into Ribston Road and continue into Bridge Road. Cross the railway bridge, and a private road leads from the left-hand side to the shed. Walking time 15 minutes.


Sheffield Corporation bus services No. 71 (Elm Tree via Darnall) and No. 52 (Ballifield or Handsworth) operate from the city past the end of Ribston Road. Service No. 71 may be boarded in Fitzalan Square (city centre) and No. 52 in Commercial Street near to Sheffield Midland Station. Both pass along Wicker, adjacent to the west end of Sheffield Victoria Station.


Note.-A new diesel depot is under construction at Tinsley.


WATH (Electric and diesel depot)


The shed is on the north side of the Barnsley line about 2½ miles west of Mexborough. The yard is visible from the line.


Turn left outside Wath North Station into Station Road. Turn right into Recreation Road and right again into Moor Road. The shed entrance is on the left just past the railway bridge. Walking time 5 minutes.


GRIMESTHORPE (BRIGHTSIDE) (Diesel stabling point)
The shed is on the east side of the line north of Attercliffe Road Station. The yard is visible from the line.


Bear sharp left outside Brightside Station into Station Lane. Turn right at the end into Meadowhall Road, and continue into Brightside Lane. The shed entrance is on the right-hand side, just before Newhall Road. Walking time 10 minutes.

Sheffield Corporation bus service No. 4 (Wincobank or Firth Park) operates along Pond Street, outside Sheffield Midland Station, and Wicker, adjacent to the west end of Sheffield Victoria Station, and passes the shed entrance.


SHIREBROOK WEST (Diesel stabling point)
The shed is on the east side of the line at the south end of the station. The yard is visible from the line.


Entrance to the shed is effected from the station yard.


East Midland Bus services No. 52 and No. 53 operate from Mansfield, Bath Lane, and pass the station.

 
 

41D CANKLOW
The shed is on the west side of the Rotherham (Masboro’) Staveley line about 2 miles south of Masboro’. The yard is visible from the line.


Go straight ahead out of Masboro’ Station along Station Road, and continue into Masborough Street. Continue along Main Street passing Rotherham Central Station on the left and turn right at the end into Westgate. Continue into Canklow Road, and after about 1½ miles turn right into Bawtry Road. Go under the railway bridge and turn left immediately into White Hill Lane. The shed entrance is on the left-hand side 300 yards further on. Walking time 60 minutes.


Sheffield and Rotherham Corporations joint bus service No 87 (Sheffield Pond Street to Maltby) operates along Bawtry Road. A bus labelled Canklow operates between the centre of Rotherham and the end of Bawtry Road.

 
 

41E STAVELEY (BARROW HILL)
The shed is at the side of a goods spur at Barrowhill.


Leave Staveley Works Station by the approach road, and turn left into Works Road, passing between Staveley Old and New Works. Go under the railway bridge, and a private road leads to the shed from the opposite side of the crossroads immediately after the bridge. Walking time 15 minutes.


Joint bus route No. 99 operates from Sheffield (Pond Street) to Chesterfield (Beetwell Street) and passes the shed entrance.


Note.-Locomotives from this depot are hired out on a permanent basis, and are to be found at Staveley Old Works and Staveley New Works.

 
 

41F MEXBOROUGH
The shed is on the south side of the line west of the station. The yard is visible from the line.


Turn right outside the station along a rough cinder path After about 20 yards turn right under the railway bridge, and right again along a path running parallel to the railway. This leads to the shed. Walking time 5 minutes.

 
 

41H STAVELEY (G.C.)
The shed is on the east side of the line south of Staveley (Central) Station. This yard is visible from the line.


Cross Lowgates (main road) outside Staveley (Central) Station, and proceed along Railway Cottages, parallel to the line. Turn right into an opening where the roadway bends to the left. Ascend the railway embankment on the left-hand side just before the railway over-bridge. This embankment is the top of the shed yard. Walking time 5 minutes.

 
 

41J LANGWITH
The shed is on the west side of the Sutton-in-Ashfield line south of Shirebrook North Station. The yard is visible from the line which is only used by passenger trains on Saturdays during the operation of the summer service.


From Shirebrook North Station
Turn right along the footbridge that connects the south end of the station platforms, and continue along East View at the side of some waste land. Turn left at the end into Langwith Road. Continue for about 200 yards and turn left into Eland Road. The shed entrance is at the end of this cul-de-sac. Walking time 5 minutes.


Note.-Shirebrook North Station is only open to passenger traffic on Saturdays during the operation of the summer service.


From Shirebrook (West) Station
Turn left outside the station along Station Road, and right into Langwith Road. Continue for almost ½ mile, and turn right into Eland Road. The shed entrance is at the end of this short cul-de-sac. Walking time 20 minutes.

East Midland Bus services No. 52 and No. 53 operate from Mansfield, Bath Lane, and pass the station.
