50A YORK
North Shed
The shed is on the west side of the main line north of the station. The yard is visible from the line.

 

Turn left outside the station along Station Road and first left into Leeman Road. Continue under a long railway bridge, and the shed entrance is on the right-hand side. Walking time 10 minutes.

 

South Shed (Closed-used for locomotive storage)
The shed is in a triangle of lines on the west side of the main line, at the south end of the station. The yard is not visible from the main line.

 

A boarded crossing leads from the most westerly platform (No. 16) of the station to the shed.

 

Diesel Shed
The shed is on the east side of the line at the south end of the station. The yard is visible from the line.

 

Turn right outside the station along Station Road, and after a short distance descend a flight of steps which lead from the right-hand side. Follow the arrows to the Railway Museum and pass this on the left. The shed is a few yards further on the right. Walking time 5 minutes

 
 
The shed is in a maze of lines just south of the main line to Hessle about 2¼ miles from Hull Station. The yard is partially visible from the line.Turn right outside Hull Station into Paragon Square. 
 
Turn right into Carr Lane, left into Porter Street, and bear right into Hessle Road. About 1¼ miles further on turn left into Brighton Street, and right into a private B.T.C. road. A footbridge leads from this road to the shed. Walking time 35 minutes.
 
Bus service No. 70 Dairycoates) operates from Paragon Street to Brighton Street (terminus).

HULL (ALEXANDRA DOCK) (Diesel depot)
The shed is in Hull Dockland.

 

Turn right outside Hull Station into Paragon Square. Turn left into Carr Lane and continue across the square into Alfred Street. Continue into Gelder Street and over Drypool Bridge. Turn right into Great Union Street and bear left into Hedon Road. Enter Alexandra Dock by the main gate and bear left along the dock road. This passes the shed office on the left-hand side. There is no shed and the locos stand on a pit. Walking time 40 minutes.

 
 

50C HULL (BOTANIC GARDENS) (Diesel depot)
The shed is on the east side of the line south of Botanic Gardens Station. The yard is visible from the line.

 

Cross the main road (Springbank) outside Botanic Gardens Station, and continue into Derringham Street. Turn right into Kimberley Street. This is a cul-de-sac, and the shed entrance is at the end. Walking time 5 minutes.

 

Hull Corporation bus services Nos. 11 and 12 (Wymersley Road) operate between Coach Station, Ferensway close to Hull Station, and pass the end of Derringham Street.

 
 

50D GOOLE
The shed is on the north side of the line just west of Goole West Junction, and about 14 miles west of the station. The yard is partially visible from the lines from Goole to Knottingley, Selby and Doncaster.

 

Cross Booth Ferry Road outside the station into Marriners Street and bear right past a large island in the middle of the road. A fenced footpath leads from the right-hand side just past this island. Continue along this footpath passing a footbridge on the right-hand side. The path then turns slightly left and follows the north side of the Docks goods line. Continue for about a mile and pass under the Doncaster line. Just past this bridge another line comes in from the right-hand side. A boarded crossing leads across this line to the shed. Walking time 30 minutes.

 
 

50E SCARBOROUGH
The shed is on the west side of the Malton line south of the station. The yard is visible from the line.

 

Turn left outside Scarborough Central Station along Westborough and continue into Falsgrave Road. Bear left at the island into Seamer Road, and the shed entrance is on the left-hand side. Walking time 15 minutes.

 

Note.-The shed consists of two separate buildings.

 
 

50F MALTON
The shed is south of the line at the west end of the station. The yard is visible from the line.

 

A boarded crossing leads from the west end of the station platforms to the shed.

51A DARLINGTON
The shed is on the east side of the line north of Darlington Station. The yard is visible from the line.

Leave Darlington Station by the approach road running north. Turn right under the bridge into Parkgate, and fork left into Yarm Road. Turn left into Greeen Stret. This is a cul-de-sac and a broad path leads from the end to the shed. Walking time 5 minutes.
 
 
51C WEST HARTLEPOOL
The shed is on the west side of the line south of the station The yard is visible from the line.

Go straight ahead across the station yard, and turn left into Church Street. Bear right with this road and continue into Mainsforth Terrace. The shed entrance is on the left-hand side Walking time 10 minutes.

Note.-The shed consists of two separate buildings some distance apart.
 
 
51F WEST AUCKLAND
The shed is on the west side of a goods line midway between West Auckland and Bishop Auckland.

Turn right outside Bishop Auckland Station along the approach road and right into the main West Auckland road (A688). Continue for about 1½ miles and turn left into the main Shildon road (B6283). A cinder path leads to the shed from the right-hand side of this road, just before the railway bridge. Walking time 40 minutes.
 
 
51J NORTHALLERTON
The shed is on the low level goods line at the west side of the station. The yard is visible from the main line.

Turn right out of the station yard under a bridge. A cinder path leads to the shed from the right-hand side by a level crossing a few yards further on. Walking time 5 minutes.
 
 
51L THORNABY
The shed is on the north side of the line east of Thornaby Station. The yard is visible from the line.

Turn left at the end of Thornaby Station approach road into Mandale Road (A176), and fork left into Middlesbrough Road (A176). The shed entrance is on the left-hand side. Walking time 15 minutes.

The Stockton to Middlesbrough bus service passes the shed entrance.

52A GATESHEAD
The shed is on the north side of the line west of Gateshead West Station. The yard is visible from the line.

 

From Gateshead East Station
Turn left outside Gateshead East Station and almost immediately right into Half Moon Lane. Continue under a low railway bridge, and ascend a short flight of steps on the left-hand side, immediately under the bridge. A paved path leads from the top of these steps past the rear of Gateshead West Station and bears right past the loco works to the shed. Walking time 5 minutes.

 

From Gateshead West Station
Turn right outside Gateshead West Station into a narrow street and bear right almost immediately into Half Moon Lane. Follow directions as from Gateshead East Station.

 
 

52B HEATON
The shed is in the fork of the main and North Shields lines east of the station. The yard is partially visible from both lines.

 

Turn left outside the south side of Heaton Station along North View. Continue along this road to the end. A path leads to the shed from a gate in Chillingham Road opposite the end of North View. Walking time 5 minutes.

 

Note.-There are conductor rails in the vicinity of the coal stage.

 
 

52C BLAYDON
The shed is on the south side of the Newcastle line east of the station. The yard is partially visible from the line.

 

Turn left outside Blaydon Station along Tyne Street, and continue over the level crossing along the main road to Newcastle (A695) parallel to the railway. The shed entrance is on the left hand side. Walking time 10 minutes.

 

United bus services operate from a bus station close to Newcastle Station past the shed entrance

 
 

52D TWEEDMOUTH
The shed is on the west side of the main line south of the station. The yard is visible from the line.

 

Turn left outside the station, and proceed through the goods yard to the shed. Walking time less than 5 minutes.

A bus service from Berwick-on-Tweed passes the shed.

 

ALNMOUTH
The shed is on the west side of the station. The yard is partially visible from the line.

 

Turn right outside the station, cross the railway bridge and turn right into an opening at the rear of a row of houses Descend a flight of steps at the end of this opening to the shed. Walking time 5 minutes.

 
 

52E PERCY MAIN
The shed is on the east side of the Blyth and Tyne colliery line, south of the point where it runs under the Newcastle to North Shields line. The yard is not visible from the North Shields line.

 

Turn left outside Percy Main Station into Burdon Street. Turn right into St. John’s Street and left into a passage at the back of a row of houses, just past Railway Street. The shed entrance is on the right at the end of this passage. Walking time 10 minutes.

 
 

52F NORTH BLYTH
The shed is in the dockland on the north bank of the river. There is no passenger service to North Blyth.

 

Turn left outside Blyth Station into Turner Street and con tinue into Regent Street. Turn left into Hodgsons Lane, right almost immediately into Crawford Street, and right into Ferry Street. (Walking time 10 minutes.) Cross the river Blyth on the ferry. Turn right at the north end of the ferry and follow the road round to the left (under a railway bridge).

 

The shed entrance is on the left-hand side, a few yards further on. Walking time from the ferry 5 minutes.

 

The shed is on the north side of the line west of Blyth Station. The yard is visible from the line.

 

Turn right outside Blyth Station into Turner Street, and right along Delavel Terrace. Turn right at the end into Morpeth Road. The shed entrance is on the right-hand side just past the level crossing. Walking time 5 minutes.

 
 

52G SUNDERLAND (SOUTH DOCK)
The shed is at the end of a spur by the docks.

 

Turn right outside Sunderland Station into High Street West. Continue into High Street East and fork right into Warren Street. Turn right into Barrack Street and left into Prospect Row. The shed is on the right-hand side. Walking time 20 minutes.

 

A bus service operates from High Street East to the Dock Entrance close to the shed.

 
 

52H TYNE DOCK
The shed is on the west side of a goods line known as the Pontop and South Shields Branch.

 

Turn left outside Tyne Dock Station into Boldon Lane. Turn right into Green Lane, across the railway bridge, and turn sharp right into a short dead end. The shed entrance is a gate on the left-hand side at the end of a block of houses. Walking time 20 minutes.

 

A circular bus service labelled Simondside runs from Tyne Dock Station to the corner of Green Lane and Wenlock Road near the shed entrance.

 

Note.-The coal stage is some distance along the line from the shed.

 
 

52J SOUTH GOSFORTH (Diesel railcar depot)
The depot is on the north side of a goods line which diverges from the South Gosforth to Longbenton line about 1 mile north of South Gosforth Station.

 

Turn right from the approach to South Gosforth Station into Station Road. Fork left along a footpath almost opposite the end of Sandringham Road. Pass some blocks of modern flats on the left and continue into the end of Ridgewood Gardens (a short road). Turn left into Hunters Road, and cross the railway by means of the footbridge at the end. Continue along a footpath and turn Yeft at the end into a lane. Bear left into Hollywood Avenue, and left into a drive adjacent to house No. 78. This leads to the depot. Walking time 20 minutes.

 
 

52K CONSETT
The shed is situated at Consett Junction, in the fork of the Blackhill-Consett, and Blackhill-Bishop Auckland and Durham lines. There is now no regular passenger service on either of these lines, and both Consett and Blackhill sations are closed.

 

Proceed along Front Street from Market Square (centre of the town), and continue for about three-quarters of a mile, crossing an iron works level-crossing en route. Cross the bridge over several British Railways and iron works lines. A few yards after the railway bridge a path will be seen on the left-hand side leading through some allotments. Continue along this path for about 10 yards from where a boarded crossing over four lines leads to the shed. Walking time 25 minutes.

 

Northern General bus services Nos. 11 and 33 operate from Marlborough Crescent, Newcastle-upon-Tyne to Consett, and the same company operates a service from Durham to Consett.

55A HOLBECK (LEEDS)
The shed is on the west side of the Woodlesford line about mile south of Leeds City Station. The yard is partially visible from the line.

From Leeds City Station
Turn sharp right outside the station into Bishopsgate. Turn right into Neville Street and continue into Victoria Road. Turn right into Manor Road and left at the end into Marshall Street. Turn right at the end into Nineveh Road and the shed entrance is on the right just past the railway under-bridge. Walking time 20 minutes.

From Leeds Central Station
Turn sharp right outside the station into Wellington Street. Turn right into Thirsk Row and right again into Whitehall Road. Turn left into Springwell Road and right at the end into Water Lane. Bear left into Bridge Road, left again into Nineveh Road, and the shed entrance is on the left. Walking time 20 minutes.

55B STOURTON
The shed is on the west side of the main line about 3 miles north of Woodlesford Station. The top of the yard is visible from the line.

From Leeds Central Station
Turn right outside the staion into Wellington Street and continue into City Square. Turn right into Bishopsgate and continue along Swinegate. Turn right into Bridge End and continue along Hunslet Road and Low Road. Fork right into Wakefield Road, cross the railway bridge, and a cinder path leads to the shed from the left-hand side. Walking time 60 minutes.

From Leeds City Station
Turn right outside the station into City Square and proceed as above. Walking time 60 minutes.

55C FARNLEY JUNCTION
The Shed is on the west side of the line from Leeds to Morley Low south of Farnley and Wortley Station (closed). The yard is visible from the line.

From Leeds City Station
Turn left outside the station into City Square, left again into Aire Street, and continue into Whitehall Road, After 1¾ miles turn left into Royds Lane and bear right along a rough road just before the railway over-bridge. This leads up a hill and gradually turns into a cinder path. The shed is at the top of the hill. Walking time 55 minutes.

From Leeds Central Station
Turn sharp right outside the station into Wellington Street. Turn right into Thirsk Row, right again into Whitehall Road and continue as above. Walking time 55 minutes.

Go straight across St. George’s Square outside the station and turn left into John William Street. Turn right just before the railway bridge into Viaduct Street. Turn left into Bradford Road, pass under the railway bridge, and turn right almost immediately into Alder Street. A path leads over a footbridge to the shed from a gate on the right-hand side of this road. Walking time 20 minutes.
 
 
55H NEVILLE HILL (LEEDS)
The shed is on the north side of the Cross Gates line about 2 miles east of Leeds City Station. The yard is partially visible from the line.

From Leeds Central Station
Turn right outside the station into Wellington Street and congilue through City Square into Boar Lane. Continue along Duncan Street, turn left into Call Lane and right into New York Street. Continue along York Lane and turn right into York Road. After about 1¼ miles turn right into Osmondthorpe Lane and the shed entrance is on the right-hand side. Walking time 45 minutes.

From Leeds City Station
Turn right outside the station into City Square and proceed as above. Walking time 45 minutes.

56A WAKEFIELD
The shed is on the east side of the Pontefract line, running south from the east end of Kirkgate Station. The yard is visible from the line.

From Wakefield Kirkgate Station
Turn left outside the station into Station Passage and left again at the end into Kirkgate. Cross the new bridge and fork left lnto Doncaster Road. Turn left into Elmtree Street and a footbridge leads to the shed from the end of this cul-de-sac. Walking time 20 minutes.

From Wakefield Westgate Station
Turn left outside the station into Westgate. Turn right into Kirkgate and continue as above. Walking time 35 minutes.

56B ARDSLEY
The shed is on the east side of the line south of the station. The yard is visible from the line.

Leave Ardsley Station by the south exit. This is a cinder path about ¼ mile long leading to a road over-bridge. Another cinder path leads from the opposite side of this road to the shed. Walking time 10 minutes.
 
 
56C COPLEY HILL
The shed is in the triangle formed by the Leeds Central Armley Moor and Ardsley lines. The yard is partially visible from these lines.

From Leeds City Station
Turn left outside the station into City Square, left again into Aire Street and continue into Whitehall Road. Turn right into Copley Hill and the shed entrance is a door in the wall on the left-hand side between the railway over-bridges. Walking time 15 minutes.

From Leeds Central Station
Turn sharp right outside the station into Wellington Street. Turn right into Thirsk Row, right again into Whitehall Road and proceed as stated above. Walking time 15 minutes.

56D MIRFIELD
The shed is on the north side of the line west of the station. The yard is visible from the line.

Turn right outside the station along Back Station Road. Turn left into Newgate and bear right into Chadwick Lane. Turn right into Woodend Road. After running parallel to the railway for 200 yards, this road crosses over the line, and leads to the back of the shed. Walking time 10 minutes.
 
 
56E SOWERBY BRIDGE
The shed is on the north side of the line west of the station. The yard is visible from the line.

Go straight ahead outside the station along Station Road. Turn right into Town Hall going under the railway bridge. Turn left into Walton Street. A flight of steps leads to the shed from a gate on the left—hand side of this road. Walking time 10 minutes.
 
 
56F LOW MOOR
The shed is on the north side of Low Moor Station. The yard is visible from the line.

Turn right outside the station into Cleckheaton Road and almost immediately turn right into Lockwood Street. Continue along a cinder path and the shed entrance is on the right-hand side. Walking time less than 5 minutes.

The shed is on the south side of the Laisterdyke line about ¾ mile from Bradford Exchange Station. The yard is visible from the line.

Turn right outside Bradford Exchange Station into Leeds Road and right again into Vicar Lane. Turn left into Bridge Street and continue into Wakefield Road. Fork left into Bowling Back Lane and the shed entrance is on the left-hand side. Walking time 15 minutes.
